Donald D Kummerfeld

Donald D. Kummerfeld, of Jersey City, NJ, suddenly passed away on July 5, 2012 at the Jersey City Medical Center.  He was 78 years old.  Don was born in Gilroy, California on June 11, 1934 to Theodore and Edith (nee: Bowman) Kummerfeld.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Elizabeth "Beth" Kummerfeld, cherished daughter Tia, and loving grandson Alexander.  Donald held a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy and a Master's Degree in Political Science from Stanford University and a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Harvard University.  After a fellowship at the London School of Economics, London, England, he went to work in Washington, DC as a budget official in the Executive Office of the President of the United States under Presidents Kennedy and Johnson.  From 1968 to 1969, he was the staff director at the Urban Institute, a nonprofit research group.  In 1969 he co-founded the Government Research Company, which then published The National Journal, a nonpartisan magazine on politics and policy.  From 1971 to 1975 he worked for the First Boston Corporation in public finance, consulting with states and cities on bond borrowing.  In January of 1976 Donald went to work at New York City Hall under Mayor Abraham D. Beame, subsequently becoming First Deputy Mayor of New York City.  Following that, he was appointed to the New York State Emergency Financial Control Board by Governor Hugh L. Carey, where he oversaw New York City's financial operations.  Donald then went to work for Rupert Murdoch's American holding company as President and CEO and for two trade groups, the Magazine Publishers of America and the International Federation of the Periodical Press.  He has also advised New York mayors and other elected officials on fiscal issues.  In accordance with Donald's final wishes, private cremation will be held at the Rosehill Crematory, Linden, NJ.  A memorial service to honor Donald will be held at a later date.  Arrangements have been entrusted to the Introcaso-Angelo Funeral Home, 143 Brunswick Street, Jersey City, NJ.
